Known also as MundoMuzik, José Ruíz is a DJ, radio host, promoter, and collector of world music, vinyl, art, and all cultural and music ephemera. He has been a mainstay in the Bay Area music scene for over 30 years, holding residencies, or as a special guest at Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, Yoshi’s, Salsa Festival On The Fillmore, Kimball’s Carnival, Jelly’s, Glass Kat, Mr. E’s, Montero’s, Alberto’s, Harry Denton’s, Cafe Cocomo, Roccapulco, Alegro’s, Mint leaf, La Taza, La Caña, Elbow Room, Ashkenaz, and El Rio.
Ruíz has DJ’ed and opened for various artists, locally and internationally. In the 90s he was hired to build nine musical channels (Cuba, Salsa, Latin, Latin Rock, Latin Jazz, Tropical, Mexican, Latin X-MAS & Latin Grammy) for the first Internet Radio “SPINNER.COM.”
Ruíz has been able to stay connected with the pulse of his community and he sees music as a way “to explore and celebrate the diversity of human expression in an increasingly inter-connected world or connecting the dots through music.”
You can catch Ruíz on the airwaves on radio on KPOO 89.5 fm San Francisco, Sat. 12–3 pm as the host of “EN CLAVE”, playing Son, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Changüi, Bolero, Timba, Bomba, Plena, and more. He can also be heard at KPFA 94.1 fm Berkeley, 2nd Saturday. 9–11am “Music of the World” (International, Eclectic & Contemporary Grooves) and 3rd Saturday 7–9 pm on “RITMO” (Music of Latin America and beyond).
Ruíz also has ongoing residencies at, Comal, Berkeley, (eclectic lounge mix); La Pena, Berkeley, Fridays (Rumba, Son, Timba & more); Seahorse, Sausalito with live local Salsa bands; Oakland Museum Of California, Friday nights.
